Il Design può essere anche scomodo!
Il design è funzione, il des
ign è bellezza. Ma il design può anche disturbare, essere scomodo!
Noi
designer abbiamo la capacità di cogliere ciò che ci circonda. Lo elaboriam
o e lo utilizziamo come spunto per dare vita a qualcosa di nuovo.
I de
signer guardano più a fondo, scavano sotto la superficie, anche quella più
dura. Non si arrendono mai, sono quasi ossessionati dal voler capire cosa s
i nasconde dietro.
Nel corso degli anni, con i miei lavori, ho spesso
provocato, ho letteralmente versato sale sulle ferite.
Un tema a
me caro fin dai primi anni '80 è il PVC, che da allora condanno: è scienti
ficamente provato che il cloro in esso contenuto sia dannoso per gli esseri
umani e per la natura. Eppure, il PVC continua a essere prodotto. La cieca
avidità di profitto non conosce morale. Peccato.
Già all'inizio
degli anni '90, trovavo problematico il modo in cui trattiamo il mondo ani
male, per esempio tutto ciò che esigiamo dalle nostre mucche.
Non inte
ndo però elencare qui tutti i temi, ma vi invito a esplorare i 15 progetti
che ho selezionato. Non è necessario leggere il libro tutto d'un fiato: pre
ndetevi il tempo di assaporarlo.
Design darf auch unbequem sein!

Wir Designer:innen haben ein sehr aufmerksames Aufnahmevermög
en für das, was um uns herum passiert. Wir verarbeiten es und nehmen es zum
Anlass, Neues zu gestalten.
Designer:innen sehen tiefer, kratzen an O
berflächen – auch an harten. Sie geben nicht auf, sind geradezu süchtig dan
ach, zu verstehen, was dahintersteckt.
Über die Jahre habe ich mit mei
nen Arbeiten des Öfteren provoziert, habe regelrecht Salz in Wunden gestreu
t.
Ein Thema, das mich seit Anfang der 80er-Jahre beschäftigt, ist der
Kunststoff PVC, den ich seither verpöne: Das darin enthaltene Chlor ist wi
ssenschaftlich erwiesenermaßen schädlich für uns Menschen und die Natur. Tr
otzdem wird PVC weiter produziert. Die blinde Profitgier kennt keine Moral.
Schade.
Problematisch fand ich auch bereits zu Beginn der 90er-Jahre,
wie wir Menschen mit der Tierwelt umgehen – was wir etwa von unseren Kühen
alles abverlangen.
Ich will hier aber nicht alle Themen auflisten, so
ndern lade Sie ein, sich durch die 15 von mir ausgewählten Projekkte durchz
uarbeiten. Sie müssen das Buch nicht in einem Zug durchlesen – genießen Sie
es in kleinen Häppchen.
Design can be uncomfortable, too!
Design is function. Design is aesthetics. But it can also be provocative —
even uncomfortable!
As designers, we have a keen ability to take in w
hat is happening around us. We process this information and use it to inspi
re us to create something new.
Designers look deeper and scratch benea
th the surface, even when it’s difficult. They never give up; they are addi
cted to understanding what lies beneath.
Over the years, my work has o
ften been provocative; I have literally rubbed salt into wounds.
One i
ssue that has preoccupied me since the early 1980s is plastic PVC. I have d
espised it ever since because the chlorine it contains has been scientifica
lly proven to be harmful to humans and nature. Nevertheless, PVC continues
to be produced. Blind greed knows no morality. It’s a shame.
Even back
in the early 1990s, I found the way we treat animals problematic – for exa
mple, the demands we place on cows. However, I don't intend to list al
l the topics here; instead, I invite you to explore the 15 projects I have
selected. There's no need to read the book all in one breath—take your time
to savor it.
