“One of a Thousand Ways” è un progetto nato dallo studio della specie vegetale Lilium martagon e della sua rappresentazione nell’architettura dell’Appennino tosco-emiliano tra il XIII e il XV secolo d.C. La specie cresce spontaneamente lungo tutto l’arco alpino e appenninico, a un’altitudine compresa tra i 300 e i 1.900 metri sul livello del mare, ed è caratterizzata da un comportamento di selezione degli insetti impollinatori. Oggi la sua presenza nell’Appennino bolognese è limitata a una sola area, situata a 1.800 metri di altitudine, a causa delle trasformazioni dell’ecosistema legate ai cambiamenti climatici. I suoi fiori emettono una maggiore quantità di profumo durante le ore notturne, richiamando un gruppo ristretto di lepidotteri dotati di caratteristiche anatomiche adatte all’impollinazione.
Il progetto si sviluppa come un dispositivo performativo che, attraverso la stessa torcia frontale con cui la pianta è stata illuminata, proietta diapositive fotografiche raffiguranti la specie nel momento dell’impollinazione. Le posizioni in cui le immagini vengono proiettate mimano quelle delle pietre sulle quali la specie è rappresentata nella cripta della chiesa di Chiesa di Santa Maria della Consolazione, presso Montovolo.

„One of a Thousand Ways“ ist ein Projekt, das aus der Untersuchung der Pflanzenart Lilium martagon und ihrer Darstellung in der Architektur des toskanisch-emilianischen Apennins zwischen dem 13. und 15. Jahrhundert n. Chr.  hervorgegangen ist. Die Art wächst wild entlang des gesamten Alpen- und Apenninbogens in Höhenlagen zwischen 300 und 1.900 Metern über dem Meeresspiegel und zeichnet sich durch ein selektives Verhalten gegenüber ihren bestäubenden Insekten aus. Heute ist ihr Vorkommen im bolognesischen Apennin aufgrund der durch den Klimawandel bedingten Veränderungen des Ökosystems auf ein einziges Gebiet in 1.800 Metern Höhe beschränkt. Ihre Blüten verströmen während der Nachtstunden einen intensiveren Duft und locken damit eine kleine Gruppe von Schmetterlingen (Lepidopteren) an, deren anatomische Eigenschaften eine Bestäubung ermöglichen.
Das Projekt entfaltet sich als performatives Dispositiv: Mit derselben Stirnlampe, mit der die Pflanze im Feld beleuchtet wurde, werden fotografische Dias projiziert, die die Art im Moment der Bestäubung zeigen. Die Orte, an denen die Bilder projiziert werden, orientieren sich an den Positionen der Steine, auf denen die Art in der Krypta der Kirche Santa Maria della Consolazione bei Montovolo dargestellt ist.

“One of a Thousand Ways” is a project that emerged from the study of the plant species Lilium martagon and its representation in the architecture of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines between the 13th and 15th centuries CE. The species grows wild throughout the Alpine and Apennine ranges at elevations between 300 and 1,900 metres above sea level and is characterized by its selective interaction with insect pollinators. Today, its presence in the Bolognese Apennines is confined to a single site at an altitude of 1,800 metres due to ecosystem transformations associated with climate change. Its flowers release a stronger fragrance during the night, attracting a small group of lepidopterans whose anatomical characteristics make them effective pollinators.
The project takes the form of a performative device in which the same headlamp used to illuminate the plant in the field projects photographic slides depicting the species at the moment of pollination. The locations where the images are projected mimic the positions of the stones on which the species is represented in the crypt of the Church of Santa Maria della Consolazione, near Montovolo.
