Two short films and a connected discussion draw us closer to complex considerations around care and mobility.
“The Keepers/Őrzők” by Ágnes Erőss (7’31, 2026) is a short documentary film with Transcarpathian Hungarian minority women.
The film explores gardening, caring for the home, and tending to household animals as practices that foster a deep sense of place attachment and belonging. Yet this attachment is continually tested as the women reflect on whether - and when - they, too, might have to leave. The film reveals how these everyday acts sustain continuity and preserve a sense of home amid displacement and profound uncertainty.
Ágnes Erőss’ research in 2025-2026 was carried out within the framework of the FemMinImm MSCA Seal of Excellence project, financed by the Autonomous Province of Bozen-Bolzano. The second short film, presented in collaboration with BAU (Institute for contemporary art and ecology) documenting the forest symposium “Grass Socialities”, which took place in the context of “Pastoral Twilight” this summer in the Orlické Mountains in Czech Republic (~ 20’, 2026), presents an insight into contemporary interdisciplinary discourse around pastoralism. What does it entail to keep walking, within communities of grasses, soil, herbs, grasshoppers, butterflies, beetles, wagtails, sheep, goats, people, shrubs, trees and so on?
Pastoral Twilight: Initiatives for Rural Cultures is a two-year international collaborative project by ARE: Woods (Czechia), BAU (Italy), and Verpėjos (Lithuania) co-funded by the European Union.
